Project:Blank Film
2024
B&W Film,36 works,Dimensions and materials variable according to exhibition site Project: Blank Film is a more intimate body of work. It begins with the sudden death of a close friend and a roll of film he left behind—exposed, yet entirely undeveloped. Four years after the incident, the ongoing process of making and exhibiting becomes a way to respond to and reflect upon death, memory, and emotion: memories that are at times continuous, at times piercingly vivid, at times suspended in a haze. Through this project, I also question time itself—what is lost after death, and what, if anything, remains. Before my friend passed away, he left behind a roll of film he had already finished shooting. When I developed it, the roll came out entirely blank—exposed, yet containing nothing. It felt like his absence in my life: present only as a void, existing through emptiness. Only later did I realize that the thirty-six nearly blank frames—marked only by scratches and specks of dust—resembled fragments of a night sky. Thirty-six different constellations. And within them, perhaps, everything was already there.
